Our Story Rethinking What’s Possible in Total Knee Replacement Surgeon-driven innovation built around a different approach to the knee. Advancing Knee Replacement Through Surgeon-Driven Innovation The Beginning Changing the Approach to an Established Procedure Optimotion Implants was founded in Orlando in 2016 by four founders who saw an opportunity to rethink how total knee replacement could be performed. Their focus was the lateral approach, a muscle-sparing technique that accesses the knee from the outside rather than through the traditional anterior pathway. Performing the procedure differently required technology designed around it. Optimotion began developing the specialized instrumentation and implant systems needed to support the lateral approach, leading to the first OI implantations in July 2020. Today, that same surgeon-driven perspective continues to shape the technologies Optimotion develops. “Over 95% of my patients who had a traditional surgery and then came to me for the lateral approach say the recovery was much faster in terms of motion, easier in terms of pain, and required less narcotic medication.” Dr. Pasquale Reino Creating the Technology to Make the Lateral Approach Possible The OI Total Knee System A versatile implant platform with cemented, cementless, cruciate-retaining, and posterior-stabilized options designed to support a range of total knee replacement needs. Specialized Instrumentation Specialized instrumentation developed around lateral access, giving surgeons tools designed specifically for the approach rather than adapting instruments created for a traditional pathway. Surgeon Training & Support A hands-on training pathway that gives surgeons opportunities to observe the technique, participate in cadaveric training, learn from experienced peers, and receive support as they bring the approach into their own OR. Optimotion Implants Is Founded 2016 Optimotion Implants was founded in Orlando with a vision to rethink total knee replacement through surgeon-driven technology and the lateral approach. First U.S. Patent Application Filed 2017 Optimotion began building its intellectual property portfolio around new technologies for knee arthroplasty, laying the groundwork for continued innovation in implant systems and instrumentation. OI Blue Receives FDA Clearance 2020 The OI Blue Total Knee System received FDA 510(k) clearance, bringing Optimotion’s implant platform closer to surgeons and patients. First OI Implantations Performed 2020 The first OI systems were implanted in July 2020, marking the transition from years of development to use in total knee replacement procedures. Blue Plus Receives FDA Clearance 2024 The Blue Plus Knee System received FDA 510(k) clearance, expanding the OI Blue platform with additional posterior-stabilized implant options. Fellowship & Education Program Launches 2026 Optimotion strengthened its commitment to surgeon education through a dedicated fellowship and educational grant program. Expanding OI Technology Today Optimotion continues expanding its technology pipeline with three new systems in development and pending FDA 510(k) clearance. Future Innovations Engineering the Next Generation of Knee Technology Optimotion continues to develop new technologies around the challenges surgeons encounter in total knee replacement. From greater adjustability in complex revision cases to patient-specific instrumentation and new approaches to restoring knee function, our innovation pipeline is focused on expanding what’s possible in the OR. See What We’re Working On U.S. Patent Portfolio Protecting What Sets OI Apart Our U.S. patent portfolio spans implant design, surgical instrumentation, fixation, trialing, balancing, and procedural guidance. Each patent reflects the technologies we’ve developed around our approach to knee replacement, while continued filings help protect the systems, methods, and ideas still taking shape across our product pipeline. Become a Distributor See The Difference For Patients For many patients, recovery is about getting back to the life they want to live. These stories share the progress, milestones, and everyday wins that made the biggest difference along the way. Patient StoriesSurgeon Stories Sharon At six days, my knee bent to 120. I used a walker for possibly a day, and by the end of the first week, I was walking a mile. Debra It’s opened up my life again to do the things that I love to do. Marta If you’re miserable with your knees and walking, and it changes your life so you can’t do the things you want to do, I say go get it done. Meet the Team Behind OI Systems Optimotion began with four founders and a different way of thinking about total knee replacement. Together, they set out to develop the implants and specialized instrumentation needed to support the muscle-sparing lateral approach, ultimately bringing the first OI systems into surgery in 2020. Our Approach Designed, Developed & Made in the USA Our implant systems and surgical technologies are designed, developed, and manufactured in the United States. From the first concept through production, we remain closely involved in how our products are created, helping us maintain a direct connection between the surgeons we work with and the technology we bring to the OR.
